THE ISLAND OF RHODES
Rhodes is the fourth largest island in Greece and the largest island in the Dodecanese. Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead and covers an area of 1398 square kilometers, reaching 74.7 kilometers in length and 38 kilometers in width. The population of the island is counted at 130,000 inhabitants, 53% to 70% of them residing in Rhodes town, the island’s capital. Rhodes lies 18 kilometers southwest of Turkey in the beautiful southeastern Aegean Sea. Rhodes Town is located at the northern tip of the island and meets the Aegean Sea on its west coast and the Mediterranean Sea on its east coast.
CLIMATE
Rhodes enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and mild temperate winters. Rhodes, as well as being the island of sun, is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine every year. Rhodes has one of the longest tourist seasons of all the Greek islands, running from April until the end of October. The small spring weather provides a great choice for visitors looking to partake in an active assortment of sightseeing and outdoor activities. Sun worshippers can revel in the heat during the peak of summer temperatures, which lasts from mid-June to August. The area near Rhodes is blessed with having cooling breezes from the Aegean blowing through to keep things cool throughout the hotter summer months. Although occasional days of rain may occur during the autumn months of September and October, the island still sees an abundance of sunshine and warm weather with temperatures reaching up to 28°C. Although the winter months still see plenty of sunshine, rain also occurs, which helps keep Rhodes one of the lushest and greenest of the Greek Islands.
